The Spirit Shutdown: 1.8 Million Seats Gone & FAA O'Hare Cuts Begin—How to Rebook Your May 2026 Travel Now

I woke up to about forty text messages this morning. All from friends, family, and readers asking the same thing: "What do I do? My Spirit flight is gone."

Here is what happened. And more importantly, here is how to fix your travel plans.

What Just Happened? The 1.8 Million Seat Collapse

On May 2, 2026, at 2 AM Eastern Time, Spirit Airlines shut down completely. Not a reduction. Not a merger. A full, immediate, "effective immediately" shutdown.

The airline told passengers not to go to the airport. There are no Spirit agents at ticket counters. No one at gates. No customer service line.

Spirit's CEO Dave Davis said surging fuel costs made it impossible to continue. The airline had already gone through two bankruptcies—first in November 2024, then again in August 2025. A last-minute $500 million federal bailout fell through.

The scale is staggering. Spirit had 9,000 flights scheduled through the end of May. That is 1.8 million seats—gone. About 17,000 employees lost their jobs overnight.

For context, Spirit was the eighth-largest US airline. They carried over six million passengers through Orlando alone in 2025. Their exit removes roughly 1.8 percent of total US airline capacity.

Does that number sound low? It is not. One Boeing 737 holds about 180 passengers. Removing 1.8 million seats means finding space on roughly 10,000 alternative planes.

This number is a central hub for stranded Spirit passengers who do not have time to wait on standard four-hour hold lines.

But Wait—There Is More Bad News (The FAA Cuts)

This is happening at the worst possible time.

The FAA is also mandating flight cuts at Chicago O'Hare and other major airports due to air traffic controller shortages. So not only did we just lose 1.8 million Spirit seats, other airlines are also being forced to reduce schedules at key hubs.

Two supply shocks at once. Fewer total flights. Higher prices. Less flexibility.

Here is what you need to know about Spirit Airlines May Rebooking right now.

First Thing: Do NOT Go to the Airport

I am putting this at the top because people are already making this mistake.

BWI-Marshall Airport issued a warning to Spirit passengers: "Do not come to the airport. There are no Spirit Airlines staff on-site to assist travelers with refunds or rebooking."

The same applies at every airport Spirit served. The counters are empty. The gates are dark. There is no one to help you in person. On Website spirit mentioned do not solve queries

Save your time and your Uber fare. Stay home. Use your phone and your computer.

Getting Your Money Back: The Refund Process

Here is the surprisingly good news. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy gave a press conference saying: "If you bought a ticket and had not flown that ticket yet, the dollars that you used to buy the ticket, those are held in reserve by Spirit Airlines. That money is there." The refunds will flow back to you.

If you paid with a credit or debit card: Spirit says refunds will be processed automatically to your original form of payment.

If you booked through a third party (Expedia, Priceline, a travel agent, etc.): You need to contact that travel agent directly. Spirit will not process those refunds for you.

If you paid with vouchers, flight credits, or Free Spirit points: This is where the news is bad. Those will be treated as "unsecured creditor" claims in the bankruptcy process. You may get pennies on the dollar, or nothing at all. File a claim through the bankruptcy court, but do not count on that money for your May travel.

What If Your Refund Does Not Show Up?

The Department of Transportation recommends three options:

  1. Credit card chargeback. Call your credit card company. Request a chargeback under the Fair Credit Billing Act. This is usually the fastest way to get your money back. Most cards give you 60 to 120 days to dispute a charge. Do not wait.

  2. Travel insurance. Check your policy for "insolvency," "cessation of services," or "default." Not all policies include this, but some do.

  3. Bankruptcy claim. Spirit is directing passengers to their claims agent, Epiq. You can call them at (855) 952-6606 (toll-free US and Canada) or email SpiritAirlinesInfo@epiqglobal.com. But know that this process can take months.

Spirit Rescue Fares: Every Airline's Offer, Explained

Spirit cannot rebook you. That is your job now.

But eleven other airlines have stepped up with discounted rescue fares for stranded Spirit passengers. You generally need your Spirit confirmation number and proof of payment to qualify.

Let me break down each offer so you know where to start.

Delta Air Lines (Best for Latin America)

Delta is offering reduced, nonrefundable rescue fares for five days in US markets where Spirit operated and on Latin American routes where they competed.

If you were heading to Mexico, Colombia, or other Latin American destinations, Delta should be your first call. They have significant overlap with Spirit's international network.

Delta requires your Spirit confirmation number to waive standard last-minute fare rules.

Delta Spirit rescue fare phone number: You can book through Delta's normal website or call their customer service line.

American Airlines (Best Route Coverage)

Spirit served 72 airports. American serves 70 of them and operates 67 of the exact same routes.

American has reduced fares on overlapping Spirit routes and is even reviewing whether to add extra capacity in some markets.

Spirit rescue fare phone number for American: They have launched a dedicated page on their website displaying rescue fares. You will need your Spirit confirmation number to access them.

JetBlue ($99 Flat Rate)

JetBlue has one of the simplest offers. They are offering $99 one-way fares on routes where they competed with Spirit. This is for passengers with proof of a valid Spirit itinerary on the same route.

The catch? Travel must happen by May 6. This is for immediate, urgent travel only.

JetBlue is also capping Blue Basic fares at $299 between Fort Lauderdale and San Juan for new bookings made May 2-8 for travel through May 8.

United Airlines (Best for Online Booking)

United is capping one-way economy fares on routes where they competed with Spirit. The caps are

199fornonstopflights∗∗and∗∗

199fornonstopflights∗∗and∗∗299 for connecting itineraries.

This offer runs through May 16. You must provide your Spirit confirmation number and proof of payment online.

United serves most major cities where Spirit operated, including Atlanta, Chicago, Fort Lauderdale, Houston, Las Vegas, Miami, Newark, New Orleans, and Orlando.

Delta Spirit rescue fare phone number? No—this is United. But you can book directly on their website.

Southwest Airlines (In-Person Only)

Southwest's offer is different—and less convenient. Their capped one-way fares must be bought in person at ticket counters with proof of a canceled Spirit ticket.

The offer runs through May 6. Fares range from

200to

200to400 one-way based on travel distance.

If you live near an airport with a Southwest counter and you have time to go in person, this could work. Otherwise, focus on the online-friendly airlines first.

Frontier Airlines (50% Off)

Frontier is offering 50% off base fares across its network for select flights bought by May 10 for travel through November 19. Use promo code SAVENOW.

Since Frontier is also an ultra-low-cost carrier, this might be the closest replacement to what you originally booked.

Allegiant (Bonus Points)

Allegiant is offering 50% back in bonus points in its Allways Rewards program for new travel booked by May 12 and flown by June 20 on eligible routes. Use code ALLWAYSTHERE.

This is less direct than a fare discount, but if you fly Allegiant often, the points have real value.

Avelo (75% Off + Status Match)

Avelo is offering 75% off base fares on select flights using promo code TRYAVELO on tickets bought by May 13 for travel through November 17.

Avelo is also offering a status match for Spirit frequent flyers.

A Warning About Free Spirit Miles and Credits

If you have Free Spirit loyalty points, vouchers, or unused flight credits, I have bad news.

The Department of Transportation has warned that bankruptcy claims take time and may result in only a partial refund. Any spent points are likely gone—without Spirit, they are worthless.

File a claim through the bankruptcy court to preserve your rights, but do not count on that money for your May travel plans.

Spirit Airlines May Rebooking: Your Urgent Action Plan

Here is what you need to do right now.

Step 1: Check your credit card statement. If your refund has not appeared, request a chargeback.

Step 2: If you booked through a third party (Expedia, travel agent, etc.), call them immediately.

Step 3: Check your travel insurance policy for "insolvency" coverage.

Step 4: Find your Spirit confirmation number and proof of payment. You will need these for rescue fares.

Step 5: Decide which rescue fare works best for your situation. Use the table above.

Step 6: Book as soon as possible. These offers have short windows—some end May 6, others May 10 or May 16.

Step 7: If you need help navigating the options, call the dedicated relief desk. Agents are trained to handle "carrier liquidation" scenarios.

The Bottom Line

Spirit Airlines flew its last flight on May 2, 2026. 1.8 million seats are gone from the market. And the FAA cuts at O'Hare and other airports mean even the remaining airlines are flying reduced schedules.

You will get a refund if you paid with a credit or debit card. That is the good news.

The harder part is finding a new flight at a reasonable price. The rescue fares from United, Delta, American, JetBlue, Southwest, Frontier, Allegiant, and Avelon are your best bet. But they have short windows. Do not wait.

And if you have Free Spirit points or credits? Assume they are gone. File a claim, but make other plans.
