At Grouptripo, we believe travel is about experiencing comfort, efficiency, and a touch of luxury—especially when flying long distances. Recently, we had the opportunity to experience the United Airlines Business Class, specifically their acclaimed Polaris cabin, on a journey from San Francisco to Tokyo. This blog shares our full review—from check-in and lounges to in-flight comfort and service—so you know exactly what to expect if you’re considering this premium travel option for your next adventure.
If you’re also comparing options like American Airlines Business Class, we’ll sprinkle in a few thoughts throughout for a balanced perspective.

Smooth Check-In & Lounge Access: First-Class from the Start
The business class experience with United Airlines begins at check-in. There’s a designated counter for Polaris Business Class travelers, which can speed up the process significantly during peak times. Although we arrived quite early and didn’t see a huge line difference, our checked baggage was marked with a “Priority” tag—meaning quicker processing and possibly gentler handling.
Once we passed security, we headed straight to the Polaris Business Lounge—an exclusive space tailored for premium travelers.
Polaris Lounge: Two Levels of Comfort
The Polaris lounge is a two-floor haven. The first floor is spacious, with lounge chairs, individual charging booths, and drinks stations. However, the real magic happens on the second floor, where you’ll find:
A bar with a full menu of wines, cocktails, and mocktails
Buffet-style food options depending on the time of day
A sit-down restaurant experience known as The Dining Room
We were there in the morning, so the buffet featured breakfast foods like pancakes, fruit, yogurt, and sandwiches. Not overwhelming in variety, but fresh and tasty. The Dining Room opened shortly after we arrived, and we jumped at the chance to try it.
We ordered the Bay Crab Cake and Smoked Salmon Open-Faced Bagel—delicious and light. The small portions meant we didn’t feel overstuffed before the flight and left room to try more onboard.
Boarding & First Impressions
Boarding for United Airlines Business Class was smooth and swift. Being in Group 1 was a big perk—it gave us time to settle into our seats, explore, and soak up the excitement before takeoff.
Our seats were in the center aisle, where United offers two configurations: parallel seats or angled, V-shaped seats. We went with the diagonal layout for a bit more space and privacy.
If you’re flying as a couple and enjoy chatting or sharing food during the flight, the straight-ahead seats may be better for interaction. For solo travelers or those valuing personal space, the angled seats offer ideal separation.

The Seat: Your Own Private Pod
Let’s talk about the actual seat—more like a luxury pod. Spacious, private, and packed with smart design:
Fully lie-flat bed with mattress pad, comforter, pillow, and slippers
Side table and storage cabinets for devices, chargers, or snacks
A large entertainment screen with a tray table that slides out
Adjustable lighting and privacy partition
For shorter travelers (like our 4'9" reviewer), the footwell was generously deep—no cramped legs here.
The amenity kit, while no longer in the hard-case style once given, came in a stylish Therabody-branded fanny pack with thoughtful items: socks, eye mask, moisturizer, tissues, lip balm, and a mini pen.
Dining Above the Clouds
On this 12-hour journey, United offered two full meals, one hot snack, and a self-serve snack bar in the galley.
Takeoff Meal
We kicked things off with drinks and warm nuts. The starters included a shrimp salad and warm bread, followed by our entrée choices:
Seared Asian Short Rib: Flavorful, but slightly soft in texture, bordering on meatloaf consistency. The mashed sweet potatoes and veggies were tender but lacked variety in texture.
Roasted Chicken (Japanese Style): Delicious and more structured—arguably the better of the two options.
Dessert brought options like a build-your-own ice cream sundae or a chocolate cheesecake. We loved the cheesecake’s richness, though the sundae stole the show for size and toppings.
Mid-Flight Snack
About halfway through, we were served a comforting grilled cheese sandwich with a cup of tomato bisque. Warm, gooey, and just the kind of soul food you crave mid-flight.
Self-Serve Snacks
Throughout the journey, a dedicated area offered chips, fruit, cheese plates, and even instant noodles—perfect for those who like to snack on their own time.
Pre-Landing Meal
To wrap things up, we had breakfast options:
Teriyaki Glazed Yellowtail: A traditional Japanese breakfast setup with fish, rice, vegetables, and pickled items. Well-prepared and flavorful.
Egg White Bites with Sausage and Potatoes: A classic American breakfast plate—hearty and satisfying.
Stellar Service
While the seats and food were great, the service really stood out. The flight attendants were genuinely warm, proactive, and enthusiastic. One attendant in particular was incredibly attentive, making sure our experience was smooth, comfortable, and fun.
It's this type of service that sets United Airlines Business Class apart. Friendly crew can turn a great flight into a memorable one.
Grouptripo’s Final Verdict on United Airlines Business Class
So, is United Airlines Business Class worth it?
Absolutely—especially if you’re using points. With prices averaging around $7,000 per seat, redeeming travel credit card rewards is a smart way to enjoy this luxury without burning through your savings.
While American Airlines Business Class also offers solid premium cabins with their own lounges and service perks, United’s Polaris product particularly shines on long-haul international routes. The lounges, lie-flat seats, mid-flight snacks, and dining options all add up to a complete premium experience.
Would we do it again? Without hesitation. While we’re still fans of economy when it fits the budget or trip type, we’re already plotting our next points redemption for another business class escape.
